Bōshū uchiwa begins with the material that gives the fan its frame: medake bamboo from the Bōshū area of Chiba. The bamboo is long-jointed and flexible, qualities suited to fan ribs, and Tateyama’s Funakata area once developed as a supplier of bamboo material. After the 1923 Great Kantō Earthquake, fan craftspeople and wholesalers connected with Edo and Tokyo moved around Funakata, helping full-scale fan making take root in Bōshū. The regional fan’s character comes from bamboo ribs, hand finishing, and cloth or pictorial surfaces held close in warm weather.
