Sanshu Kawara is a clay roof-tile family made mainly in Aichi Prefecture’s western Mikawa area, with a name that reaches back to the former province name Sanshu. The region had plentiful clay suited to roof tiles, and work in blended clay, glazes, and ceramic machinery gathered around it. From clay extraction and pugging through forming, drying, glazing, firing at about 1,150 C, selection, and shipment, the tile stays tied to earth, heat, and roofs.
