Japanese name若狭塗
In Obama City, Fukui, Wakasa-nuri is tied to Wakasa Road and to chopsticks shaped through wood-base preparation, repeated coating, and sales work in Fukutani. The local beginning centers on Matsuura Sanjuro, an early Edo lacquerer said to have imagined the seabed.

In Obama City, Fukui Prefecture, Wakasa-nuri has a concrete place name: Obama on Wakasa Road. The work is easiest to picture through Wakasa-nuri chopsticks. At Hashi no Furusatokan WAKASA in Fukutani, one part prepares chopstick materials, another builds the chopsticks by repeated coating, and a sales side takes up the finished pieces. The older image reaches back to Matsuura Sanjuro, a lacquerer for the Obama Domain in the early Edo period, who is said to have imagined the seabed when creating Wakasa-nuri.

Where this selection is officially registered, designated, or recognized in Japan.
It is written 若狭塗 in Japanese. Search Rakuten and other Japanese sites with that spelling — the English name will not return the listings.
Porous earthenware is usually given a "medome" treatment first — simmer it gently in rice-rinsing water (or water with a little flour), then cool, rinse, and air-dry. This reduces staining and absorbed smells. Porcelain normally just needs a wash. Follow the listing where it says otherwise.
Handmade earthenware, pieces with gold or silver overglaze, and lacquerware generally should not go in a dishwasher, microwave, or heated drying cabinet; heat-resistant porcelain usually can. Check the Rakuten listing for the specific piece.
Wakasa lacquerware is a tableware from Fukui. We compile its regional connection and characteristics against official registries, local sources, and live Rakuten listings.
Most options are shelf-stable, boxed, and travel well, so they suit gifting or bringing home. Confirm the final storage and delivery terms on the Rakuten listing.
We don't sell directly. This page compiles Rakuten listings and affiliate links; purchase, payment, stock, and delivery all happen on the Rakuten listing.
