As of May 2025, the Yamanaka lacquerware cooperative counted 250 member establishments and about 1,200 workers. The Yamanaka-nuri production area also includes one-of-a-kind vessels. One inquiry asked for wooden lacquerware sized for preschool children and durable everyday pieces for adults, and makers responded with product proposals plus a refinishing service. Another inquiry about a wiping-lacquer tea scoop was routed to a Yamanaka maker specializing in tea utensils for a made-to-order proposal.
Some Yamanaka-nuri tableware can be used in a microwave or dishwasher. Everyday lacquerware can be kept in use through a refinishing service, such as recoating pieces used daily by adults. Tea utensils, such as a wiping-lacquer (fukiurushi) tea scoop, can be commissioned from a Yamanaka maker specializing in tea utensils.
Porous earthenware is usually given a "medome" treatment first — simmer it gently in rice-rinsing water (or water with a little flour), then cool, rinse, and air-dry. This reduces staining and odour absorption. Porcelain normally just needs a wash. Follow the listing where it says otherwise.
