Kaga maki-e belongs to the Kanazawa lacquerware family of Ishikawa Prefecture, most clearly through tea utensils and interior furnishings. Before the shine appears, joinery, turned wood, or bentwood bases receive cloth reinforcement, lacquer ground, polishing, and layers of lacquer; metal powder such as gold powder is then scattered onto designs drawn in wet lacquer. Around 1630, Maeda Toshitsune brought Igarashi Doho to a Kaga domain workshop, placing named maki-e makers, a Kanazawa craft, and objects for tea and rooms on the same line.

Kaga maki-e is a maki-e technique within Kanazawa lacquerware, a craft of Ishikawa Prefecture linked mainly to tea utensils and furnishings. Around 1630, Maeda Toshitsune invited the craftsman Igarashi Doho to a workshop in the Kaga domain, and the Igarashi family line later carried the technique forward. Pieces begin as wooden bases that receive undercoating and dozens of preparatory layers, then decorative work using metal powders and other methods.
Kanazawa City is identified as the main production area for this craft within Ishikawa Prefecture. The Kanazawa Lacquerware Commerce and Industry Cooperative is named as the maker organization for the craft. Wooden bases can be made through joinery, turning, or bentwood construction methods, followed by hon-kataji undercoating and dozens of lower-coat steps. Decoration techniques include flat, raised, polished, and layered polished maki-e (shishiai togidashi maki-e).
Tea utensils are among the items made with Kaga maki-e. Kaga maki-e work centers on individually made furnishings and one-off commissioned pieces rather than mass production. Ishikawa craft fairs have offered guided Kaga maki-e experience workshops for visitors.
Porous earthenware is usually given a "medome" treatment first — simmer it gently in rice-rinsing water (or water with a little flour), then cool, rinse, and air-dry. This reduces staining and odour absorption. Porcelain normally just needs a wash. Follow the listing where it says otherwise.
Handmade earthenware, pieces with gold or silver overglaze, and lacquerware generally should not go in a dishwasher, microwave, or heated drying cabinet; heat-resistant porcelain usually can. Check the Rakuten listing for the specific piece.
Most options are shelf-stable, boxed, and travel well, so they suit gifting or bringing home. Confirm the final storage and delivery terms on the Rakuten listing.
